Its two sexes can be easily identified by the presence of pointed ovipositor at the posterior abdominal tip of female and a rounded abdominal end in male. Besides this, we have identified the presence of pecten hairs on the dorsal surface of abdomen and a distinct posterior depression in the wings restricted in males only. Wings in the males also show bushy appearance of microtrichia at post anal lobe which is totally lacking in females. The number of pecten hairs showed normal distribution pattern on right and left halves of the abdomen. An analysis pertaining to the distribution of pecten hairs on both sides of abdomen revealed non-significant difference between the mean numbers of hairs of the two sides.</p> <p><strong>DOI: <a href=""></a></strong></p> 2019-02-07T00:00:00+01:00 ##submission.copyrightStatement## Antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities of secondary metabolites of an endophytic fungus isolated from Ageratum conyzoides 2019-06-06T22:14:44+02:00 Nonye T. Esimone <p>Endophytes have proven to be the promising sources of biologically active products which are of interest for specific medicinal applications. In this study, secondary metabolites of an endophytic fungus isolated from fresh leaves of <em>Ageratum conyzoides </em>was investigated for antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties. Isolation of the endophytic fungus, fermentation and extraction of the fungal secondary metabolites were carried out using standard procedures.&nbsp; The extract was evaluated for antimicrobial activity using the agar well diffusion and agar dilution methods. Also, the immunomodulatory activity of the extract was evaluated using cyclophosphamide‚ÄĎinduced immunosuppression assay. The crude fungal extract was subjected to High Performance Liquid Chromatography-Diode Array Detector (HPLC-DAD) analysis to identify the chemical constituents. The endophytic fungal extract at 1 mg/ml, exhibited antimicrobial activity against <em>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</em>, <em>Salmonella </em>Typhi, <em>Candida albicans</em> and <em>Aspergillus niger</em> with inhibition zone diameters of 8, 5, 3 and 2 mm respectively. Also, the minimum inhibitory concentrations of the extract against the test organisms ranged from 0.03-1 mg/ml. The extract at 100 and 200 mg/kg, showed immune-stimulatory activity in a dose related manner with a significant increase in the total white blood cells and neutrophil levels. The extract also exhibited immune-protective properties by inhibiting the immune-suppressive activity of cyclophosphamide. HPLC-DAD revealed the presence of xanthorrhizol, orsellinic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, scalarolide reported previously to have antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties. Its expansion in a different field is phenomenal. But for some reason, it has been holding the rate of development. To count reason behind being its failure despite such promising properties is its high-cost production and potential harm to nature. Beside the less significant amount of production, there is a need for the eco-friendly, less toxic and cleaner method of its production. It could not have been more favorable, in case if it could lead to an increase in production at the same time in its efficiency too. Algae mediated biosynthesis of the nanoparticle is one of the probable solutions of the above-mentioned drawbacks. This review article focuses on the synthesis of nanoparticles with help of algae and their potential benefits over conventional based methods. The current study encompasses the variation in petal number and relative abundance of night-flowering jasmine flowers. The observed petal number of this flower ranges from four to nine. The most abundant variety is the flowers with six petals, which comprises 60.69% of the total number of flowers counted. The four and nine-petalled flowers are extremely rare making only 0.02% each. This study represents the statistical data obtained directly from the observed natural phenomenon.
